Audrey Owens, a well known and respected figure in the Riverside Superior Court, pled guilty at the beginning of March to stealing $129,000 in Social Security benefits intended for her grandmother who died in 2000.
Owens was a deputy public defender in Riverside County, who was indicted by a federal grand jury in July on five felony counts of theft of government property.
The indictment claimed that for 12 years Owens transferred some of her grandmother’s Social Security payments after her death into her own personal account to pay bills and personal expenses, including contributions to the Riverside County Employee Campaign.
She pled guilty to two felony counts and is scheduled to be sentenced June 2nd before U.S. District Judge Virginia A. Phillips in federal court at 3470 Twelfth Street, Riverside.
Owens could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison.
